VATICAN CITY<\/strong> \u2013 The Salesian Family has a profound new reason to rejoice. On May 22, 2026, the Holy Father Pope Leo XIV authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decree recognizing the heroic virtues of Servant of God Fr.<\/sup> Costantino Vendrame<\/strong>. With this official decree, the beloved Salesian missionary is now formally recognized as “Venerable.”<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Heart for the Missions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Born into a modest, faithful family in San Martino di Colle Umberto (Treviso) on August 27, 1893, Fr.<\/sup> Vendrame felt the call to the priesthood early on.<\/sup> Driven by a burning desire to become a missionary, he joined the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1912.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After faithfully serving as a soldier during World War I, he was ordained a priest in Milan in 1924.<\/sup> That same year, in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin, he received his missionary crucifix and set sail for Northeast India (Assam), arriving in Shillong on Christmas Eve.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1924 until his death in 1957, Fr. Vendrame poured his life into the local communities across Shillong, Jowai, and Tamil Nadu.<\/sup> He became a near-legendary figure in the region\u2014a tireless traveler who walked immense distances to reach the most remote villages.<\/sup> By choosing to live as “the poorest of the poor,” he accepted the deep hardships and dangers of apostolic life with a constant, radiant smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strength Through Trials<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

His profound charity made him a man of dialogue, respected and cherished not just by Christians, but by people of all faiths who recognized him as a true “man of God.”<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even during the dark years of World War II, his spirit remained unbroken. As an Italian citizen on British soil, he was imprisoned alongside many others in internment camps at Deoli and Dehra Dun.<\/sup> Yet, even in the severe constraints of captivity, Fr. Vendrame became a pillar of strength, constantly comforting and sustaining his fellow prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Legacy of Salesian Love<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Often compared to great saints like St. Paul and St. Francis Xavier during his lifetime, the people he served summed up his legacy best: “We remember Don Vendrame as a priest who loved us with the heart of Christ, warm and human, strong and faithful, ready to give his life for us.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fr. Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General for the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family, highlighted the deep spiritual significance of this declaration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
