In his homily, the Cardinal described the new Blesseds as “a seed of peace and fraternity” whose witness continues to shine amid the darkness of human history.

The newly beatified martyrs, led by Fr Jan Świerc, SDB, died between 1941 and 1942 as a consequence of the torture, violence, and inhumane conditions they endured in the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Dachau. Following the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939, the Catholic Church became one of the principal targets of persecution, and many priests and religious paid the ultimate price for their fidelity to Christ.

Witnesses Known to St John Paul II

The beatification adds nine new names to the rich spiritual heritage of Poland, a land that has given the Church numerous saints and blesseds, including St John Paul II and St Faustina Kowalska.

During his homily, Cardinal Semeraro also recalled Jan Tyranowski, the revered lay spiritual mentor of the young Karol Wojtyła. Several of the newly beatified Salesians exercised their ministry at St Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Dębniki, entrusted to the Salesians and closely associated with the spiritual formation of the future pope. St John Paul II himself remembered some of these priests in his book Gift and Mystery.

Faithful Sons of Don Bosco

Reflecting on their lives, Cardinal Semeraro highlighted the Salesian spirit that characterized the ministry of Fr Świerc and his companions. Following the example of Don Bosco, they dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to the education of young people and the service of the poor, the sick, and those in need.

They saw in every young person a beloved child of God deserving care, guidance, and hope. Faced with hatred, injustice, and religious persecution, they did not abandon their mission. Instead, they remained faithful to their vocation until death, offering their lives as a testimony of faith and peace.

A Message for Young People and the Salesian Family

According to Cardinal Semeraro, the beatification carries a special message for today’s youth. In a culture that often presents happiness and success apart from truth, responsibility, and sacrifice, the new Blesseds remind young people that authentic fulfillment is found in Christ.

He encouraged young people to open their hearts to the Lord, especially during moments of uncertainty, loneliness, and confusion. Christ does not destroy human dreams, he said, but purifies and illuminates them, leading each person toward a life of greater meaning and generosity.

The Cardinal also addressed the Salesians of Don Bosco, expressing the hope that the witness of these martyrs would inspire priests, religious, and lay collaborators to respond courageously to God’s call. Echoing the words of St John Paul II, he urged them: “Do not be afraid. Do not let yourselves be frightened by the challenge of a holy priestly life.”

Finally, he invited all the faithful to rediscover the importance of listening to the voice of the Good Shepherd. In an age increasingly marked by digital isolation and superficial relationships, Christians are called to deepen their relationship with God and make courageous choices as disciples of Christ.

A Sign of Hope for the World

Concluding the celebration, Cardinal Semeraro reflected on the many conflicts and wars that continue to affect the world today. In this context, the nine new Salesian Blesseds stand as powerful witnesses of peace, reminding humanity that even in the darkest moments of history, hope, love, and fraternity can prevail.

Their lives and sacrifice remain a lasting testimony that fidelity to Christ is stronger than hatred and that the light of the Gospel continues to shine through those who courageously live and die for their faith.

Kraków, Poland – The Salesian Family rejoiced as nine Polish Salesian priests, who gave their lives during the Nazi persecution of the Second World War, were beatified at the Sanctuary of St John Paul II in Kraków.
