Centenary Celebration of the China Province
On May 30, 2026, Salesians and their lay partners gathered at the Salesian Missionary House in Shau Kei Wan, Hong Kong, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the China Province. The event was marked by gratitude, historical reflection, and a renewed commitment to youth ministry.
Key Addresses and Themes:
- A Call for Zeal: Fr. William Matthews, Regional Councillor for East Asia-Oceania, opened the gathering by urging the Salesian Family to remain passionate about evangelization. By referencing Don Bosco’s “Dream at Nine Years of age,” he reminded attendees that obedience and study are the keys to overcoming modern challenges and building a strong foundation for youth outreach.
- Honoring Historical Courage: Provincial Fr. Domingos Leong led a session reflecting on the province’s 100-year history. He paid tribute to early Salesian pioneers who bravely navigated wartime turmoil to protect and shelter abandoned youth. He challenged the current generation to emulate this unconditional dedication to the salvation of young people.
- Spiritual Guidance: Following a break, Vice-Provincial Fr. Antonio Leung offered an insightful exploration of the Rector Major’s Strenna, focusing the community on their guiding spiritual themes for the year.
Becoming “Servants of Joy”
The highlight of the anniversary was the Eucharistic Celebration. During his homily, Fr. Matthews drew parallels between St. John Bosco and the prophet Jeremiah, noting that both were chosen by God before birth to lead the young. Referencing the 2026 Strenna imagery, he called upon the attendees to act as “servants of joy,” working alongside Jesus and Mary to bring the light of the Gospel to marginalized and abandoned youth.
The historic milestone concluded with a celebratory luncheon, after which participants returned to their respective missions, spiritually energized by the centenary’s message.
